Preparing a budget
There are a number of things that affect the fees that any professional musicians charge:
- The number of performers in the line-up
- Duration of the performance
- (The normal performance duration is 3 x 45 minute sets over 3 hours (the minimum call is usually 2 x 45 minute sets over 2 hours, for the same fee). A wedding is often 4 x 45 minute sets over a 4 hour period
- How much travel is involved
- (It is usual for the booker to pay for travel expenses and accommodation where the performance is outside the metropolitan area of the city in which the act is based.)
- Whether we need to supply sound equipment such as amplifiers, or if they will be provided by the venue
- The size of the audience
- Our experience
- New acts are often looking to build their experience/performances at your risk and hence will often perform for less. This can be very risky and not recommended for important events such as weddings and special events. Bravo Music has over 20 years experience – your satisfaction is guaranteed
- How popular /in demand the act is
- (Acts that are in demand such as us firstly have their schedules near to fully booked out)
- Time of year
- Entertainment is in much demand at certain times of the year, such as the pre-Xmas season and New Year’s Eve. Many acts charge significantly higher fees during these times, and you can expect the number of acts that are available to be far less than usual. Our fees remain the same all year.
- Day of week and time of day. Performances on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night are the most in demand and hence fees are often higher than mid week.
Average Industry Band Pricing
Keeping in mind all the above factors, here are some average industry estimates for 3 x 45 minute sets over 3 hours:
- Solo: up to around $500
- 2 piece (Duo): $500 to $1,000
- 3 piece (Trio): $700 to $1,500
- 4 piece & more: from $1,500 upwards; not uncommon for a popular 4 or 5 piece to be in the order of $3,000 to $5,000
But my budget is simply not large enough – what should I do?
The best thing to do as a start is to have a look into an act with fewer members. Rather than a 4 piece, consider a 2 piece act instead.
We play with backing tracks and a drum machine that creates a professional sound and atmosphere as full as that of a 4 or 5 piece band.
